Emergency Management Workshop Takeaways
KENNESAW, Ga. (Mar 6, 2017) — The Office of Emergency Management (OEM) hosted a workshop for CHSS faculty and staff on February 27th discussing how to respond in possible emergency situations that could potentially happen on campus. Thinking through emergency situations before they occur should be common practice for everyone because emergencies require quick responses and actions. Pre-planning or even brainstorming about actions to take during an emergency can help anyone who finds themselves in that emergency situation in the future.
In order to prepare yourself for an emergency, there are few steps you can take. The first step is to know your building - know how to evacuate (get out), where to find shelter for a shelter-in-place incident and how to secure-in-place within classrooms and offices. Knowing your building is essential for emergencies such as tornado warnings, fires, active shooter incidents, or other violent crimes. The next step is to stay engaged with OEM. They have social media sites that they push emergency information through. (Twitter: @ksu_safety, FB: KennesawStateOEM) They have found that students, faculty and staff often get information through social media before any other means of communication. The Office of Emergency Management sends alerts via Rave Alert (to cell phones, email, etc.) with instructions on what to do in the event of an emergency. If you are a student, ensure that your contact information is up-to-date in Owl Express and faculty and staff should check ADP. If you are not receiving alerts, please contact oem@kennesaw.edu. OEM encourages everyone on campus to download the LiveSafe app. The LiveSafe app not only can inform you about any emergency situations on campus, but it can also be used to report potential threats or emergencies. The final step is speaking up. If you see something threatening or suspicious, you should report it to the Kennesaw State University Police Department by calling 470-578-6666 or you can submit tips through LiveSafe. See Something, Say Something! Remember, emergency preparedness isn’t just a one-time thing. Being aware of your surroundings and knowing the course of action to take in the event that an emergency does occur are crucial for the safety and well-being of yourself and others around you.
