On October 3, the School of Government and International Affairs welcomed distinguished U.S. diplomat Andrei M. Cotton to Dr. Stephen Collins' class, POLS 2230 Careers in International Affairs.

Cotton, a career Foreign Service Officer with nearly two decades of experience, shared insights on the diverse and dynamic pathways available in international affairs and diplomacy.

During his visit, Cotton offered a comprehensive look at his diplomatic journey, which spans assignments in high-stakes regions around the world. His overseas postings include roles such as Political-Economic Counselor in Juba, South Sudan, Counterterrorism Unit Chief in Islamabad, Pakistan, and Regional Counterterrorism Coordinator in Nairobi, Kenya.

Cotton, who is currently the Diplomat in Residence for the South Region, also drew upon his extensive domestic experience, including his role as Deputy Director of the Counterterrorism Bureau Office of Terrorist Screening and Interdiction.

Diplomats in Residence are career Foreign Service Officers and Specialists located throughout the U.S. who provide guidance and advice on careers, internships and fellowships to students and professionals in the communities they serve.

Cotton engaged the students in a candid discussion about the demands and rewards of Foreign Service work.

The students in Dr. Collins’ class were able to ask questions about the daily realities of a career in international affairs, such as balancing personal and professional life while stationed abroad and the skills necessary to succeed in diplomatic roles.

For Dr. Collins’ students, Cotton’s visit underscored the global reach and responsibilities that accompany a career in diplomacy. "My students were captivated by Mr. Cotton's talk on serving the nation through a career as a US Foreign Service Officer. He provided encouragement and practical advice for how students can begin now building a strong portfolio of education, professional skills, and global experiences to make themselves competitive candidates for the US Foreign Service."

Cotton’s appearance aligns with SGIA’s commitment to preparing students for successful careers in public service and international affairs by connecting them with experienced practitioners and offering insight into the workings of diplomacy in some of the world’s most challenging regions.
