Valarie has a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design. Valarie comes to KSU with 22 years of professional advising experience from Georgia Tech. She is an innovator who created two new programs with ISYE (Industrial Systems and Engineering). Her first program was an "at-risk" program she called, "At Potential" to help struggling students to succeed with graduation. The second program that she created, which is still going strong, is "Mission Possible Summer Enrichment Program," which is a summer program centered on underrepresented students to learn more about engineering, especially the ISYE major. Valarie brought to the Undergraduate Advising Center her vast years of experience from a Tier 1 Engineering University, and her dedication to her students and programs created previously. Valarie is a dog lover, enjoys working out, and is also passionate about traveling.

Valarie is the committee leader for STAR (Students Taking Academic Responsibility) for the Murky Middle population. This talent committee of six RCHSS advisors is creating processes, information, and insight on GPAs ranging from 2.74 to 2.0 and how it could affect them while in college and after.

Before she came to KSU, she worked at Georgia Tech for 25 years. She has been in the advising arena for 25+ years. She loves working with all majors and all students. She says, "It is a great feeling knowing that I am actually working in my dream job.  Students make a difference and I want to see all students succeed. My passion is working with the "At Risk" population and getting them back on track from the minor bumps in the road they seem to have taken." She received her B.S. in Sociology and minor in Psychology from University of West Georgia and her M.Ed. in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University. She has been married to her husband, Ricky, for over 35 years. She has four daughters who are grown, and one son who was born in 2011. All five of her children are adopted. She also has 5 grandchildren. She loves advising, traveling, the beach, shopping, swimming, NASCAR, golfing, and spending time with family.
Her tip for students is:  Make sure you see your advisor at least once a year and ask lots of questions. An example of questions to ask: am I on track to graduate, have I met prerequisite courses to keep me progressing forward in my curriculum, should I do a study abroad, or take a foreign language course, what extra-curricular activities would be good for me, how can I get my GPA higher, and why do I need an internship? Great questions that need to be explored with your academic advisor.
