Celebrating Shakespeare

KENNESAW, Ga. (Apr 22, 2016) — The English Department, the Department of Theater and Performance Studies, the literary club, and NCTE teamed up to celebrate the 400th anniversary of William Shakespeare’s death by hosting an reading of Shakespeare’s sonnets in the Legacy Gazebo.

While Shakespeare physically left this world 400 years ago, his legacy is alive and well. He is the most produced playwright, and his works serve as forms of inspiration. Shakespeare’s plays and poetry are continually being reimagined and reproduced. However, they remain beloved and iconic by every generation that embraces them. Shakespeare also gifted the English language with over 200 words and phrases that society continues to use today.

Shakespeare offers lessons about human nature, and it is through his works that students learn about flaws and greatness. His works capture the messiness of people, their contradictions and complexities. Reading Shakespeare is a lesson in vocabulary and character, which makes him still relevant to students today.
