  • Most liberal arts majors find employment in business. Skills in communication, research and critical thinking are of great value to employers. History and Philosophy majors are prepared for entrance into a number of professions including government service, work with non-governmental agencies and law. Contrary to popular opinion, the overwhelming majority of graduates in history and philosophy do not teach.

  • To declare or change your major, go on your Owl Express account under the "Registration and Student Records" tab. Select"Request Change Degree Program." Complete the online form. Please keep checking your Owl Express transcript. In several days, your transcript will show your major (halfway down the transcript). Scroll down the page further to locate the name of your assigned adviser.
  • The department strongly recommends that majors declare a minor in a related field of study or complete a certificate program approved by their advisor. In History and History Education, the public history certificate offers opportunities to learn skills valuable for employment in museums, historic preservation and related fields.

  • There are no overrides for full classes. You can add your name to the wait list. You will be notified by email if a seat becomes available.
  • Because faculty are not 12 month employees, courses offered in the summer must meet minimum enrollments. Generally, this means that we cannot offer 3000 and 4000 level courses during the summer months. If you need upper division courses, it’s best to enroll in a summer study abroad program, which offers credit in history or philosophy. You can also plan to take core classes in the summer.

  • Students who have attempted a course twice may not enroll without departmental permission. Please complete the Repeat Override Restriction Request Form on the department website.
  • Yes. University policy requires that all official university business be completed using your student email (students.kennesaw.edu) Please check this email frequently for important messages about available courses, enrollment, graduation requirements, and changes to degree programs.
  • All students should purchase the latest edition of the Chicago Manual of Style commonly known as Turabian. 
  • No. You must repeat this course. Please note that you may only repeat a course twice for credit.
  • In order to graduate in four years, students will need to enroll in at least five courses each semester. Since the Board of Regents suggests two hours of study for each hour spent in class, five courses will require approximately 30 hours of study each week not including class attendance. Full time study is full time work. You may refer to the four year map for history or philosophy.
  • Contact the Registrar’s Office and petition to graduate as soon as you think it is possible. The Registrar’s office will complete a degree audit and note any deficiencies in Degree Works. Your advisor can assist you with this evaluation but the petition is the final word.
  • Your advisor is assigned in Owl Express. Please always contact your advisor to schedule an advising appointment. 
  • If your advisor is unavailable (i.e. summer semester, short notice) please make an appointment with the RCHSS Undergraduate Advising Center. If you are a junior, remember to schedule an appointment with your advisor before early registration begins.
  • Please meet with your advisor to determine if your plan will meet requirements for the major. If your advisor agrees, please contact Dr. Jennifer Dickey who coordinates internships for the department.
  • The Senior Thesis is a capstone experience, which is an option for students needing a writing sample or planning to apply for professional or graduate school. Students meeting the minimum GPA requirements and prerequisites may enroll in two Senior Research Seminars or one Senior Research Seminar followed by Senior Thesis in their last year of study. Students must meet minimum GPA requirements and be approved by their advisor and the department before being given permission to enroll.
