Students Participate in Homelessness Awareness Week Events

KENNESAW, Ga. (Apr 1, 2010) — During the week of October 12-17, 2009, students and faculty in the Department of Sociology participated in several events related to Homelessness Awareness Week at Kennesaw State University.

Several students and faculty member Robin Crawford participated in the Sleep-Out which took place from 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 15 through noon on Saturday, October 17.

Additionally members of the Criminal Justice Student Organization, under the supervision of Faculty Advisor Assistant Professor Peter Fenton, adopted the role of law enforcement officers, issuing “citations” for infractions on Thursday afternoon and evening, and making “arrests” on Friday afternoon. This was the second year that Dr. Fenton and the CJSO took part in Homelessness Awareness Week.

New to the event this year was the participation of students in the Criminal Justice Honor Society and the “Quality of Life” court that they held. Several CJHS members, including President Brittany Trambauer Briggs and Vice President Stephen Nolen, served as officers of the court, and local attorney Stephen Steele of Moore, Ingram, Johnson & Steele served as the judge. The court proceedings, which garnered an audience of more than one hundred students and faculty members, “adjudicated” several “offenders” including students and Ms. Crawford. Fortunately, all “offenders” were found not guilty and released.
