Mary McMyne has an MFA in Creative Writing from New York University and undergraduate and graduate degrees in English and creative writing from Louisiana State University. She has published three books: the speculative historical novels The Book of Gothel (Hachette, 2022) and A Rose by Any Other Name (Hachette, 2024), and an award-winning poetry chapbook, Wolf Skin (Dancing Girl Press, 2014). Her short fiction and poetry has appeared in venues like Gulf Coast, Chattahoochee Review, Cimarron Review, Strange Horizons, Apex Magazine, and The Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion. Her awards include a grant from the Sustainable Arts Foundation to research The Book of Gothel in Germany, a National Endowment for the Arts Parent Artist Fellowship to Vermont Studio Center, and the Faulkner-Wisdom Prize for a Novel-in-Progress.
McMyne is fascinated with folklore, history, and the stories behind stories. She specializes in teaching fiction with a particular emphasis on genre fiction such as fantasy and science fiction, horror, historical fiction, and fairytale retellings. She has previously taught English and Creative Writing at Lake Superior State University, New York University, and elsewhere.
